Smiling Man

Veneers

Gaps, discoloration, and chips in your teeth can cause feelings of embarrassment and make you self-conscious about your smile.

Veneers are thin shells that cover these imperfections, giving your teeth a whiter, straighter, and healthier appearance.

Dr. Garrett B.K. Oka at Sweet Tooth Dental in Kailua-Kona, HI, can craft custom veneers to give you a beautiful smile.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are attached to the front surface of each tooth. This cosmetic dental procedure covers imperfections such as:

Candidates for Dental Veneers

During your initial consultation, Dr. Oka will examine your teeth and discuss your dental history and cosmetic goals. There are several factors your dentist will use to determine if you qualify for this cosmetic treatment:

Sufficient Enamel

During your exam, your dentist will determine if you have sufficient enamel. If you have worn or thin enamel, you may not qualify for veneers.

Degree of Misalignment

Dental veneers can give you a more symmetrical-looking smile by concealing a tooth that is crooked or misaligned. However, significant misalignment will typically require orthodontics, like ClearCorrect aligners.

Good Oral Health

Before you can receive veneers in Kailua-Kona, your mouth must be healthy enough to support them. If you suffer from gum disease, teeth grinding, or decay, these issues must be addressed first. Protective night guards and dental treatments such as fillings and gum disease therapy can help improve your candidacy.

Good Oral Hygiene

Patients must practice good oral hygiene at home and visit the dentist for general care to maintain their veneers. Healthy teeth and gums are essential to prevent decay under the veneer and to maintain optimal oral health.

Ready for a Permanent Solution

Because veneers require the removal of a small amount of enamel, it is important for patients to remember that once a tooth has been prepared, it will always require some sort of restoration. If you are not ready for a permanent solution, treatments like dental bonding with composite resin may be a better option.

Not a Veneers Candidate? You May Have Other Options

Dr. Oka offers multiple cosmetic dentistry treatments. When you visit our Kona office, he can assess your candidacy and explain your options. Even if veneers aren't right for you, you may still be eligible for procedures like teeth whitening, crowns, or dental bonding.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Oka will examine your teeth and discuss your dental history and goals to determine if porcelain veneers are right for you. Dr. Oka will use digital technology to take comfortable impressions of your mouth to craft your custom veneers.

Preparations

A dental veneer requires a small amount of enamel to be removed from the tooth. This ensures the veneer fits and bonds properly to the tooth. Traditional veneers require about 0.5 to 0.7 millimeters of enamel to be removed, but the amount varies by patient. Our dentist will remove just enough to prevent the veneer from appearing bulky so it blends in seamlessly with your natural teeth. You will be provided with temporary veneers while your porcelain veneers are created.

Fabrication

A trusted dental lab will use your digital impressions to craft your porcelain veneers. Once they're created, you can return to our office where Dr. Oka will ensure proper fit, function, and comfort before the veneers are permanently bonded to each tooth.

Cleaning and Care

Cleaning your dental veneers is as simple as brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush, flossing, and attending regular dental cleanings and exams. While porcelain veneers are durable, they may become more susceptible to damage over time. It is advised that you take special care or limit eating foods such as:

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do dental veneers cost?

The cost of veneers varies based on each patient's needs. Some patients will only require one or two veneers, while others may need more. Your dentist can give you an estimate during your initial consultation.

Does insurance cover veneers?

Because veneers are considered cosmetic dentistry, dental insurance will not contribute to the cost; however, our Kailua-Kona practice offers financing options through CareCredit® and Springstone℠ to make veneers a more affordable treatment option for our patients.

Does receiving veneers hurt?

Dr. Oka will use local anesthesia so you feel no discomfort when he prepares your teeth for veneers. Any discomfort after your treatment can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication, but it may not be necessary. You may only feel mild sensitivity as you adjust to your veneers.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

On average, veneers last around 10 years before they need to be replaced, but can last much longer with proper care. Over time, the porcelain can become worn down and more susceptible to damage, so patients should plan on replacing them eventually.
