Health
Your teeth and gums must be in good health before receiving teeth whitening treatment. Patients who suffer from gum disease or tooth decay need to have these conditions treated before teeth whitening.
Age
It is typically not recommended for anyone under the age of 16 to receive teeth whitening.
Sensitivity
Those who have extremely sensitive teeth may not be recommended for teeth whitening as the whitening gel can sometimes worsen tooth sensitivity.
Restorations
If you have dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, or dental bridges, you may not be a good candidate for teeth whitening. Though treatment would whiten your natural teeth, your restorations would not be affected, causing your smile to become unbalanced.
Stains
Professional teeth whitening is effective at removing surface stains. Deeper stains may not be lifted through whitening alone. We Offer Two Types of Professional Whitening In-Office and Take-Home Options Available
Our professional whitening treatments make use of concentrated bleaching gels that are not available over the counter. You will first have a consultation with our dentist so he can assess your oral health and aesthetic goals. Based on your consultation and lifestyle, he can help you determine which whitening treatment is best for you.
In-Office Treatment
This treatment is done at our Kailua-Kona office and supervised by Garrett Oka, DDS. This option typically requires only one appointment and is a great choice for patients who want whiter teeth as quickly as possible. During your appointment, our dentist will apply a whitening gel to the surface of your teeth. This gel is then activated with UV light. The bleaching gel breaks down the surface stains, revealing a naturally whiter smile.
Take-Home Kits
Though take-home kits are another effective way to whiten your teeth, you will play a big role in ensuring the best possible results. First, a mold of your teeth will be taken at our Kailua-Kona dental practice so we can create custom mouth trays for you. At home, you will fill the trays with whitening gel and position the trays over your teeth. The trays should be worn for about an hour at a time. Several weeks may be needed to achieve your desired results.
Are There Any Side Effects To Teeth Whitening?

When performed by a trained dentist, there are virtually no risks or side effects to teeth whitening. Some patients may experience mild tooth sensitivity following the procedure; however, this should only be temporary, and any sensitivity can be managed with a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.
