Dental ImplantsDental implants are a surefire way to restore your smile, rejuvenate your appearance, and renew the way you feel about your look. However, understanding how the implant process works and just what it can do for you is crucial in making the decision to undergo this procedure. Learn more about more about dental implants by reading below, and contact Dr. Garrett Oka at Sweet Tooth Dental in Kailua Kona, HI, if you are interested in undergoing treatment!

The Long-Term Benefits of Dental Implants
A missing tooth causes the bone below it to degrade during a process called bone atrophy, a problem that is prevented by dental implants. Additionally, implants fill in your gaps to boost your self-esteem and confidence to help you feel great about the way you look. Thanks to their design and materials, implants are permanent and non-removable, allowing you to go about your daily life and oral care plan just as you would with natural teeth.

A Quick History of Dental Implants
Dentists began using modern dental implants in the 1970s. However, evidence of this powerful dental procedure has been traced back thousands of years. Bone, animal teeth, and even stone have all been used in various ancient societies to replace missing teeth. By the 1800s, prosthetic teeth made from gold were implanted into fresh extraction sites, paving the way for the modern implant styles we see today. Dentists tested various materials in the 1960s, developing the titanium implant used now.

What is a dental implant?

  • Fixture: A dental implant’s foundation lies in its fixture, a small, titanium post that your dentist surgically implants into the jawbone beneath your missing tooth.
  • Abutment: The abutment connects the prosthetic tooth to hold it in place on its fixture.
  • Prosthetic: Made from porcelain, a prosthetic tooth is customized by a dental laboratory for each individual patient. It looks just like natural teeth and will fit seamlessly into your smile.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
A good candidate for dental implants is in good oral and general health and able to, in some cases, undergo anesthesia to complete their implant procedure. They should also have sufficient bone volume in the area of the implant and a strong at-home oral care routine to keep their teeth and implants healthy and free from teeth decay and gum disease.

Cosmetic Dentistry SmileFind out what cosmetic dentistry can do to enhance your appearance!

Did you know that smiling offers a host of amazing health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and boosting endorphins? Of course, if you are embarrassed by your teeth, you may find that you are less likely to smile than someone who feels confident in their appearance; fortunately, our Kailua Kona, HI, cosmetic dentist Dr. Garrett Oka can turn that frown upside down thanks to cosmetic dentistry!

You Want a Whiter Smile

Most people acquire some degree of yellowing in their teeth as they get older. Of course, this is a simple fix with the help of professional teeth whitening. Whether you want to let us do the whitening for you or you want to whiten from home, we offer in-office and at-home whitening systems that can give you more effective results than commercial whitening products from your local drugstore.

Not sure which option to choose? If you want to get a visibly whiter smile in about one hour, than in-office whitening is the option for you; however, if you are a bit more budget conscious and like the convenience of whitening from the comfort of your home, ask us about at-home whitening treatment.

You Want to Hide a Chipped Tooth

While more serious dental damage will require restorative treatments such as a dental crown or filling, if you are dealing with a minor chip or crack, then this is something that can be covered with dental bonding. During bonding, our Kailua Kona dentist applies a tooth-colored resin to the area, which will then be shaped over the chip to hide it completely. Once the resin has been shaped, it will be hardened with a dental laser.

You Want to Cover Several Imperfections

Maybe you don’t just have some discolorations to treat or a little chip to fix, but instead have several different cosmetic issues at once. If so, then you may want to turn to dental veneers. These thin, porcelain shells are affixed to the front of one or more teeth to improve the shape, size, color, and even symmetry of your smile. Imagine some of those beautiful Hollywood smiles—many of them are thanks to dental veneers.

You Want a Straighter Smile

You have two approaches. You could choose a nearly invisible orthodontic system like Invisalign to close gaps between teeth or to fix a crooked tooth or misaligned smile; however, if you are dealing with very minor misalignment issues even dental veneers could make your smile appear straighter without needing braces.

Are you in need of cosmetic bonding or cosmetic dentistry from your Kailua Kona, HI, dentist?dental bonding

Dental bonding is a state of the art restorative procedure in cosmetic dentistry. It's an easy and inexpensive way to fix broken and decayed teeth to give you the beautiful smile you want.

Bonding

Bonding uses tooth-colored materials called “composite resins,” which consist of a mixture of plastic and glass, to provide translucency and strength, and hide cosmetically unattractive defects. The composite bonds with the rest of your tooth and fixes:

  • Chips
  • Discoloration
  • Minor spacing
  • Irregularities

The Procedure

Composite resins come in a variety of tooth shades for truly lifelike results. Getting a dental bonding doesn't need any laboratory work so your Kailua Kona dentist can finish the procedure in one visit, probably about 30 minutes to an hour.

The procedure consists of:

  • Cleaning the surface of the tooth
  • Etch the surface of your teeth with an acidic gel to open up tiny pores in the surface
  • Rinse off the resin in a well-matched shade of filling
  • A special curing light hardens the bonding material
  • After the first layer is cured, another layer is painted onto your tooth
  • Your dentist builds up the tooth until the restoration has the necessary thickness
  • Your tooth is then shaped using a drill

Taking Care of Your Bondings

Preventative care is key to maintaining your dental health and dental bondings, so make sure you:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once before bed
  • Make sure you visit your dentist twice a year for a routine checkup and dental cleaning
  • Changing your diet to eat less sugars and incorporating healthy foods like apples, and drinking plenty of water to wash away debris

If you have any questions or concerns about dental bondings or cosmetic dentistry in Kailua Kona, HI, then call your doctor at (808) 329-0889.

LookingGoodfortheHolidays

The holidays are a time for getting together with family and friends from near and far. The memories you make at these joyful celebrations are the ones you’ll treasure forever, but it can be hard to show good cheer if you’re not happy with the way your teeth look. If you’re keeping that grin under wraps, we may be able to perk up your smile with some quick and economical in-office treatments.

A professional teeth cleaning is one of the best values in dental care. In just minutes, we can remove the buildup of hardened tartar that can make your teeth look dull and yellowed. Tartar can also lead to tooth decay and gum disease—two kinds of trouble you don’t need! While you’re in the office, you will also have a thorough exam that could prevent minor issues like small cavities and bleeding gums from becoming more serious dental problems. When you leave, your teeth will look and feel sparkly clean.

If your smile doesn’t look as bright as you’d like, ask about teeth whitening treatments. In-office whitening is a safe and effective way to lighten your teeth up to 10 shades in a single visit! If you have more time, you can get similar results from a take-home kit that we can provide—one that’s custom-made just for you.

Are chips or cracks making your teeth look less than perfect? Cosmetic bonding could be the answer. Translucent, tooth-colored bonding material can be applied to your teeth to repair minor cracks, chips or spacing irregularities. This in-office procedure usually requires just one visit and can make a dramatic difference in your smile.

So as holiday celebrations draw near, why not give yourself a reason to smile? Contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation to see if professional teeth cleaning, teeth whitening or cosmetic bonding could give your smile some holiday sparkle! Do you avoid smiling because your teeth are stained? Just one professional teeth whitening session can dramatically improve the teeth whiteningappearance of your dull teeth. Kona, HI, dentist Dr. Garrett Oka shares some information on the whitening process.

How does whitening eliminate stains?

Stains can be a natural part of aging or may occur when dark pigments from tobacco, foods and beverages sink deep into the pores of your tooth enamel. When stains penetrate your enamel, no amount of brushing will remove them. Getting rid of those stains requires hydrogen peroxide, a very effective stain buster.

Hydrogen peroxide targets the darkly colored pigments and breaks them apart, effectively eliminating stains. The chemical compound is the active ingredient in both over-the-counter and professional whitening agents. Because drugstore whitening kits contain a weak formulation of hydrogen peroxide, it may take a few weeks or months until the product begins to produce results. Professional-strength hydrogen peroxide used by dental offices offers much quicker results, which is an important consideration if you know you won't have the patience to follow through with do-it-yourself whitening.

How long does professional teeth whitening take?

When you visit our Kona office, you can choose from in-office or at-home whitening. Both options offer impressive results, although an in-office session whitens your teeth in about an hour, while you'll need to use take-home trays and whitening gel for a few weeks to achieve maximum whitening.

How can I keep my teeth white and bright after whitening?

Avoiding the things that originally caused your stains can help you maintain your results for several years. Quit smoking and avoid or limit these foods and beverages:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Cola
  • Wine
  • Sports Drinks
  • Berries
  • Soy Sauce
  • Tomato Sauce

If you do happen to notice that your teeth are beginning to look a little dull, you can touch them up with at-home whitening gels and trays provided by our office. Regular brushing and flossing will also keep your teeth looking their best.

Teeth whitening can give you the bright smile you deserve. Call Kona, HI, dentist Dr. Garrett Oka at (808) 329-0889 to schedule your appointment.
